How Molong Early Learning Centre Turned a Fundraising Challenge Into a 172-Tub Success Story

One of the biggest concerns for small schools, early learning centres and community groups is whether they can raise enough money to make fundraising worthwhile. For regional and remote organisations, that challenge can feel even bigger. Freight costs, smaller communities and fewer local fundraising opportunities can all make it harder to reach the final goal.

That’s why the recent fundraising success of Molong Early Learning Centre in Central West NSW is such a wonderful success story. Through its Billy G’s Gourmet Cookie Dough fundraiser, Molong Early Learning Centre showed that successful fundraising is not just about the size of a school or group. It is about community spirit, clear communication and giving families a reason to rally together.

The Challenge: Regional Fundraising and Freight Costs

Molong Early Learning Centre was nearing the end of its Billy G’s Gourmet Cookie Dough fundraiser. With the campaign scheduled to finish on 17 June, the centre had sold 117 tubs of cookie dough.

While this was an amazing effort, there was one problem. To qualify for freight-free delivery, the group needed to reach 152 tubs. If they fell short of the minimum order quantity, freight costs would have been approximately $230.

For a small early learning centre, that is a significant amount of money. For a small community fundraiser, that amount can make a real difference to the final profit.

Like many regional fundraising groups across Australia, Molong Early Learning Centre was facing a challenge that had nothing to do with community support or fundraising enthusiasm. It was simply a matter of geography.

Looking for a Solution

When Sharon, from our team, identified the situation, she explored whether there were any practical alternatives that could help the centre avoid these additional costs.

Several delivery options were considered. Unfortunately, Molong’s nearest freight free delivery point was almost four hours away on a round trip, making collection impractical for families and staff.

At Australian Fundraising, we believe every fundraiser matters, regardless of whether it is run by a large metropolitan school or a small community group. Rather than accepting the outcome, the focus shifted to finding a way to give the centre every possible opportunity to succeed.

Because Molong Early Learning Centre had completed pre-registration and would qualify for a push scooter incentive at 152 tubs, it was decided to give the group one additional day to fundraise. The centre was also encouraged to begin promoting the scooter immediately as part of a final fundraising push.

The strategy was simple. Give families another reason to support the fundraiser, the community one more opportunity to get involved, and give the centre every chance to reach its goal.

The Result

The response from the community was extraordinary. By 1:00pm the following day, Molong Early Learning Centre had reached 172 tubs sold. Not only did the group comfortably exceed the 152-tub threshold required for freight free delivery, but they also secured the push scooter incentive and significantly increased their overall fundraising profit.

What had looked like a difficult financial outcome only a day earlier had transformed into a fantastic fundraising success story. For a small regional early learning centre, those additional sales made a meaningful difference to the final fundraising result.

The final push helped the group avoid freight costs, unlock an incentive and finish their Billy G’s Gourmet Cookie Dough fundraiser on a high.

Why This Fundraiser Worked

Many people assume fundraising success is determined by the size of a school or organisation. In reality, successful fundraising is often driven by community engagement, clear communication and having a compelling reason for people to participate.

Molong’s experience demonstrates several fundraising lessons that apply to schools, sporting clubs and community groups across Australia.

  • First, people are often willing to help when they understand the goal and can see the impact their support will have
  • Second, incentives can play an important role in generating excitement and encouraging last-minute participation
  • Finally, community fundraising works best when communities feel connected to the outcome and believe their contribution will make a difference

Can Small Schools and Early Learning Centres Run Successful Fundraisers?

Molong Early Learning Centre is a great example of how smaller groups can still achieve strong fundraising results.

A successful fundraiser does not need to come from a large school or a major organisation. With the right program, clear goals and strong community support, small schools, early learning centres and regional community groups can run fundraisers that make a real difference.

For regional groups, planning ahead is especially important. Understanding minimum order quantities, freight-free delivery requirements and available incentives can help groups get the most out of their fundraiser.

A Reminder That Every Fundraiser Matters

One of the things we love most about fundraising is that success is not reserved for large schools or major organisations. Every fundraising goal matters to the people working hard to achieve it. Whether a group is raising funds in a capital city or a small regional town, the challenges, hopes and aspirations behind the fundraiser are equally important.

Molong Early Learning Centre’s story is a wonderful example of what can happen when a community rallies behind a cause and refuses to give up when things get difficult. From 117 tubs to 172 tubs in just one day, the result was about much more than cookie dough. It was about a community coming together to create a better outcome for its children.

Congratulations to the team at Molong Early Learning Centre and the families who helped turn a potential setback into an incredible fundraising success.
